Area volleyball teams eye regional titles, state berths

There will be some familiar faces in the Region 2D and Region 1D volleyball tournaments over the next two weeks.

Each tournament’s champion and runner-up qualify for their respective state tournament quarterfinals on Nov. 10.

REGION 2D

The Region 2D tournament promises to offer plenty of excitement.

The most anticipated match could come in the semifinal round if Union and Marion make it past the quarterfinals.

Marion (18-8) goes into the tournament as the defending Region 2D champion. The Scarlet Hurricanes defeated Union last year to win their second straight regional championship.

The ’Canes also won the VHSL Class 2 championship in 2016.

Coach Amanda Hanshew’s squad enters the regional tournament coming off a Southwest District tournament championship victory over regular-season district champion Lebanon.

Union (20-4) has lost to Marion in the postseason the past two years, including last year’s regional final.

This year, the Lady Bears — who won both the Mountain 7 regular-season and tournament titles — have home-court advantage throughout the region tournament.

They host Richlands (10-9) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the regional quarterfinals.

The other three quarterfinals — Gate City (18-10) at Marion, Wise Central (9-12) at Lebanon (20-10) and Virginia High (22-7) at John Battle (12-13) — are set for 6 p.m. starts.

The semifinals move to Union on Thursday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m..

The championship is set for Saturday at 7 p.m., also at Union.

REGION 1D

The champion of the Hogoheegee District tournament won’t be decided until Tuesday, the same day the Region 1D tournament opens with a play-in game.

In that regional opener, Thomas Walker (11-11), the No. 3 team out of the Cumberland District, travels to Black Diamond District No. 3 Council (9-9) for a 7 p.m. matchup.

The Region 1D quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday when Hogoheegee top seed Patrick Henry (17-7) hosts the winner between Thomas Walker and Council at 7 p.m.

In the other quarterfinals, Eastside (12-12), the No. 2 seed from the Cumberland, takes on Grundy (11-10), the No. 2 squad out of the Black Diamond, at 6 p.m.; Black Diamond champion Honaker (20-6) welcomes the No. 2 seed from the Hogoheegee at 7 p.m.; and Cumberland champion Rye Cove (18-8) hosts the No. 3 seed from the Hogoheegee, also at 7 p.m.

The quarterfinal winners have a little time off before traveling to Saltville to compete in the semifinals at Northwood. Those matches are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The championship is set for a 7 p.m. start time at Northwood on Wednesday, Nov. 7.
